The Cost of a Private Jet
The cost of hiring a private aircraft is determined by billable hours. Aside from the hourly rental fees, many additional factors contribute to the overall cost of chartering a private aircraft. For a breakdown by aircraft, visit our private jets page for detailed information.
What factors influence the cost of flying private?
Size:
The larger the jet, the higher the cost. Private aircraft rates range, depending on the aircraft’s category. More information on types of jets, their pricing, and their capacity can be found on our Private Jets page.
Type of Aircraft:
Within each size of aircraft there are ranges of configurations available.
Aircraft's Age:
A modern charter aircraft has a higher hourly rate than an older aircraft.
Flight Time Billable:
The total billable flight time considers a variety of costs. The industry minimum charges at least 2 hours every day. Billable flying time is measured from wheels up at the departure location to wheels down at the pilot’s home base. Please understand that a one-way for the flyer is a round-trip for the operator.
Fees for Landing:
The airport authority charges landing fees, and they vary with every airport.
Handling and the Ramp:
The fixed-base operator charges ramp and handling fees for every visit. These costs can be avoided if a certain volume of gasoline is purchased.
Fees for US Segment:
Segment fees are a per-passenger government levy that varies by location. A segment fee in the United States is $4.30 per person, per leg.
The Federal Excise Tax (FET):
All domestic flight legs in the United States are subject to a 7.5 percent Federal Excise Tax. FET is levied on any sum spent on air travel. Learn how to compute flight taxes in the United States.
Overnight Crew Costs:
This cost covers food, accommodation, and other expenditures associated with the crew’s travel.
Fees for Short Legs:
Short-leg fees are normally applied to larger aircrafts. The fee is established by the aircraft's owner for flight durations that are shorter than their standard minimum. Typically, the daily standard minimum is 2 hours.
Cost of Aircraft Positioning:
Aircraft placement costs depend on the time required to pick up passengers and return to the aircraft’s home base.
Fees for Hangars:
Hangar fees are typically utilized to prevent ice, snow, or frost from collecting on aircraft surfaces and to minimize de-icing processes.
Wi-Fi Costs:
The cost of in-flight Wi-Fi varies by region. When available, a broker can arrange for an airplane that provides complimentary Wi-Fi. Wi-Fi is now standard on most private airplanes.
Cleaning Charges:
If a situation requires intensive cleaning, a cleaning cost will be applied.
Charges for Deicing:
Deicing is required whenever snow, ice, or frost collects on aircraft surfaces, on a per-application basis.
Fees for International Travel:
International costs depend on the event and area. They include landing permits, overflight permits, customs, and immigration fees, as needed by your flight route and destination country.
Surcharge for Fuel:
A fuel surcharge is applied when there is a spike in gasoline prices. Unless otherwise stated, all charter pricing at Stella Jets includes fuel fees.
